How does a balloon fly?

Hot air balloons work off the very simple concept that hot air rises, cool air sinks. The balloon depends on the temperature differential between the ambient (outside) air and the air inside the envelope (the fabric part of the balloon). When the air in the balloon is hotter than the outside temperature, it creates the lift necessary to get us off the ground.

How do you steer a balloon?

Balloons are not "steerable" in the conventional sense of the word, but the pilot has some control over direction of travel based on the different wind sheers at different altitudes. Reading the winds is one of the fun and challenging parts of flying a balloon.

How is a balloon inflated?

What type of fuel does a balloon use?

Hot air balloons use propane fuel contained in either stainless steel or aluminum tanks.

How do you know where you will land?

Part of the excitement and appeal of ballooning is the adventure of it; we never know exactly where we will land! Since we just drift with the wind, our exact course and destination are unknown. It's a great way to meet the locals!

What should I wear during a balloon flight?

Dress comfortably for a balloon ride; skirts and dress shoes are not recommended! Jeans and sneakers or hiking boots are the best attire, since we may experience field conditions including wet or tall grass. The temperature in the balloon is very similar to that on the ground, but it's advisable to bring a sweater or jacket for cool mornings or evenings.

Why is there a champagne celebration at the end of the flight?

The tradition of the champagne celebration began in the early days of ballooning in France. One of the first balloon flights met with disaster because the peasant farmers believed the aerostats to be Martians! It was decided that French wine or champagne would be a good way to appease the farmers, and the tradition still stands today.

When do balloons fly?

Ballooning is extremely wind and weather sensitive, so we fly in the early mornings at sunrise and late afternoons a few hours before sunset. This is when the winds tend to be the most favorable, and it avoids the instability caused by the sun as it heats the ground at midday. It is possible to fly balloons year round, though the weather tends to be less cooperative during the winter months.

How do we get back to the launch site after a flight?

That's where our chase crew comes in; they are the silent heroes in this operation! The crew follows along in the truck, keeping in radio contact with the pilot. When the balloon lands, they pack it up, load it into the truck, and bring us back to the launch site.

How high does the balloon fly?

Typical hot air balloons have the capacity to go as high as 15,000 to 18,000 feet (as long as the occupants have oxygen), but the usual flight ranges from treetop height to about 2,000 feet above the ground.

How big is a balloon?

Balloon size is usually measured in capacity (cubic feet), and can vary greatly from balloon to balloon. The standard sizes range from about 49,000 to about 240,000 cubic feet. The average balloon carrying 3-5 passengers is usually 90 or 105,000 cf. (Our balloon is 105, and can carry 4 plus the pilot)

How much do balloons cost?

Again, there is a wide range in this category. Like cars, balloons can be sold used for as little as $1,000, but you get what you pay for! The cost of a new balloon will depend on size, pattern, and manufacturer. A typical price would range from about $20,000 to $40,000 for a new average size balloon system. What are balloons made of, and why doesn't it burn up?

The envelope is made of a special kind of nylon called "rip-stop" nylon. Strong threads are woven in to give the fabric more resistance to tears, and then are additionally reinforced by the load tapes between the panels. Nylon will not burn, but it will melt if it gets too hot. The melting point of nylon is about 375 degrees, so we never fly the balloon hotter than 250 degrees. This leaves plenty of margin for safety! The gondola is usually made of woven wicker, which is very strong, lightweight, and flexible.

Can anyone fly a balloon?

No, you must be licensed to fly a balloon just like any other aircraft. Hot air ballooning is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and pilots must pass two written tests as well as two flight tests before they are licensed to carry paying passengers. Is it safe to ride in a balloon?

Tremendous advances have been made in the balloon manufacturing industry, and today ballooning is safer than it has ever been. In fact, the most dangerous part of a balloon flight is the ride in the truck back to the launch site!

Do people get airsick like in planes?

No. Since we are drifting along with the wind, there is very little sensation of movement. Our ascents and descents are usually gradual enough that it's difficult to even detect the change in altitude. Ballooning is really nothing like any other form of flight; it's an experience you are bound to enjoy!
